As part of its corporate social responsibility policy in developing neighboring communities, Monte Rosa Sugar Mill is currently developing a Drinking Water System Project in the Kilómetro 9 and 10 community.

Since 2014, Pantaleon has supported various communities in Nicaragua with potable water systems. To sustainably improve people’s quality of life, Pantaleon not only accompanies the communities in the installation of the project but also trains community leaders through the creation and formalization of Potable Water and Sanitation Committees (CAPS) to strengthen community self-management of water and guarantee its sustainability.

Before Pantaleon carried out these projects, the primary water source in these communities was not drinkable, representing a risk to the health of children, youth, and the elderly. In addition, the inhabitants only had rudimentarily dug wells, which in many cases were contaminated with waste, generating gastrointestinal diseases in the community.

So far, Pantaleon, with the support of its allies, has invested US$722,359 in Potable Water System Projects in Nicaragua, benefiting 8,744 people from the following communities with 17 plants:

Currently, the new drinking water system is being installed, which will take place in the Kilómetro 9 y 10 community, where it is expected to benefit 553 people. The project was developed thanks to the support of ED&FMAN and Diageo, who jointly made an approximate investment of US$94,107.

So far, the following advances have been made:

  • Informative community assemblies to present the project.
  • Donation and legalization of the land.
  • Survey of plans by the cadastre of the Municipal Mayor’s Office.
  • House-to-house filling of user files
  • Electrical and topographic study.
  • Community assembly for the election of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Committee (CAPS)
  • Legalization Drinking Water and Sanitation Committee (CAPS)
  • Municipal Mayor’s Office Certification.
  • Potable Water and Sanitation Committee (CAPS) training.
  • Law 722 and its regulations
  • Accounting books.

With the completion of the project, Pantaleon is confident that access to quality drinking water will be guaranteed for hundreds of people, always ensuring an improvement in health, the sustainability of the project, and general well-being.
