The rational use of water is part of the Guatemalan sugar mills commitment with the environment, for which several measures have been adopted, allowing them to be more efficient and sustainable. According to the Private Institute for Climate Change Research (ICC) as a result, for every ton of sugarcane produced in Guatemala, 47% less water is used compared to production worldwide.
This study also shows that the country’s meteorological conditions have made it possible for rain to contribute 73% of the crop’s water footprint during the 2019-2020 harvest.
